OH Terraces
Singaporeans are known to be workaholics by nature. They work about 48 hours or more per week which is one of the higher numbers among many other countries. Many of which work full-time jobs. It is also found that 75% of the millennial generation wants to become entrepreneurs by the year 2030. They would also like a more flexible lifestyle where they are able to work from home more often.
Singaporean’s continuous need to work raises the concern of obtaining a proper work-life balance. Especially if people are going to work from home more often, this need becomes even more crucial. To address the possibility that more people are striving to create their own business, more space is needed for them to create, share and connect. With that said, the concept of the building is Hybrid Housing. This building involves multiple sky terraces. Small, medium, and big. All serving different purposes.
The smaller somewhat sky terraces are individual study pods located at the fire staircase at the center of one of the buildings. In this pod, there is a giant window overlooking the courtyard below with temporary shops and swings and parks to keep the user entertained. The main purpose of these rooms is to allow residents to be able to work individually away from other household members if they must.
The medium sky terraces, also placed at the center of both the buildings, is used for entrepreneurial activities such as dance, yoga or art classes. It could also be used as a semi-private meeting room where the residents are able to close the glass sliding doors all around for more privacy. For more confidential matters, each resident unit’s living and dining room compromises of an entire 3400 x 10000 (biggest) PPVC module. Whether it be hosting meetings, private or music classes, it is big enough for residents to do more than just resting.
Lastly, the big sky terraces. This is mainly for residents to destress and reconnect with themselves. They merely could just sit there in silence watching the green scenery move subtly amongst the suburban background, reminding them that they can feel calm amongst the chaos of their lives. It also allows for interaction between residents to connect with one another.
It is simply not possible to ensure people will maintain a healthy balance between work and their lives. Nevertheless, living amongst sky terraces with different uses can be fulfilling as there are many possibilities of each use of space which in the end makes their lives more unpredictable and fun.
